September 2021

September has always been a bit of a sad time for me. There’s just something about it signaling the end of summer, the coming of fall, the end of another year. Previous posts have explored this feeling. Check out the Something About September essay at https://www.georgiajanet.com/?p=5527. There are a couple of other goodies on that page including a statement about 9-11 and a September song list.

This September is especially melancholic as I help on a committee for planning my fifty year high school reunion! Wow!!! Has it really been fifty years? I can’t possibly be that old. I’ve written and spoken about what it was like back then. It is amazing what commonalities exist between then and now.

There was a virus in the land then too, only it was a virus of racism, fear, unrest, and a questionable war. There was a political maelstrom brewing with Watergate right around the corner.  The deadly HIV virus was hovering somewhere just waiting to wreak havoc, not unlike our current covid virus. This year we remember the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that rocked our nation on September 11, 2001. Who would have believed fifty or even twenty years ago that we would have riots in our streets and see our nation’s capitol building under siege by some of our own citizens? Does some of this sound familiar? Have we made any progress in the last fifty years?

We would all like to think so, but sometimes that doesn’t appear to be the case. Still, there is nowhere else on earth I would want to live. I wrote this short free verse a few years ago to express some of this feeling. It applies today just as it did then.

Another source of heartache right now is that so many people are hurting, physically and emotionally. Sickness and misfortune are upon friends, family members, and acquaintances. Indeed, so many throughout our world are in unfathomable circumstances.  Please pray for healing, strength, and the comfort of God’s presence in the lives of those who are suffering.
