Today I am thankful for the Bible.
I went on a Bible hunt. I rounded up all the Bibles I could find in my house. They are pictured here together. The most meaningful to me is the white Bible, given to me Christmas, 1960, by my mother. I was eight years old. I have Bibles given to me as gifts from beloved friends. I have the Bible given to my mother when my father died, given by her work union family.
I have an aunt’s Bible. We have several of my husband’s old Bibles, including one of his great aunt’s from 1922. I have one of my children’s little white New Testaments presented to them at their baby dedication. Some are the traditional King James’ translation, some are more exotic like The Rainbow Bible and The Grandmother’s Bible. Some are like new, rarely used or opened, some are literally falling apart. All are precious.
As precious keepsakes they are invaluable. Even more, the value of what each contains cannot be measured. Where can one turn for comfort, advice, knowledge, history, love stories, miracles, and the secrets of life? There is no other book on earth that encompasses all that is in the Bible. Not surprising, considering there is no other book on earth inspired by the divine. It is the best-selling, most widely read, and most widely distributed book in the world. I shall not engage in argument regarding the Bible, but will let its own text speak for itself, and I know the truth of these verses in my own heart.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.
He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
